close ups of paintings made for 'Home' (Hons project)

I move through the painted, overgrown landscape making marks, tracks, lines that link and fall away, run down valleys, up over hills through trees and under clouds

and all the time the place I pass through leaves its mark on me

working out which pieces to include and how to position them for presentation of work

Pieces for Honours project, 2010

These works may be viewed on a wall or on the floor. I make my 'paintings' so that they can fit into different spaces, depending on what I want to say with them and what the space requires.

They adjust to their environment like a migrant bird to its summer home, then later to its winter home.
Sometimes my paintings are like wall hangings
sometimes they float, horizontal like a landscape view

sometimes they hang vertically like tamarind pods, blue gum leaves or runner beans

always, they become part of the environment which surrounds them - or at least that's the plan!

About 'Road Home': upcoming exhibition - (Sat 16th - 23rd April 2011)

'Road Home'

This exhibition will be in part a summing up of my more recent works, but it’s also a reflection of how I feel about the place I live in. This work is about feeling and as such the pieces are abstract observations and interpretations of something intangible and often indefinable. I’ve tried to express some of these elusive qualities in the way I have applied mediums, in the presentation and in the pieces I will includi the exhibition. The work is about the time spent driving through trees, winding around and over hills. It’s about walking around the place I call home, observing, smelling, listening, touching and generally feeling the stuff the world is made of.

places of stone (2 images)

Everything that seems solid shifts with time. Everything passes and traces may be left in different forms, pieces, objects, words markings, sometimes nothing at all.

Port Arthur, 1994, oil on canvas, approx 120cm x 95cm,

This work was is about presence. The foreboding presence of Port Arthur, but mostly the quiet, old-man persona of the child sitter, as if he's seen and knows things the onlooker does not. This was before the tragic events of a later date, before the stillness of the place was hijacked by tourism. But that's another story...

The Writing on the Wall, 2011, Mixed media, approx 40cm x40cm

this image was made for a the Ross (Tasmania) 2011 Painting the Town competition, 2011. The goal no longer exists. There is no trace of it now (just like the inhabitants), except a small window with a bar which is blocked off with sandstone. You view it over a sandstone wall, through an arch also of stone which was probably once the entrance to the exercise yard.

I used paper and illegible text to try and capture something of the ephemeral nature of the subject matter, inmates and building. Nothing is what it seems. Even solid rock can be crushed as was the memory of the inmates.

I wanted it to be something with many layers (of medium and of meanings). I think there is a lot of metaphor but my aim was to keep it simple so that those layers are revealed slowly and at different times by the viewer.

It was also a fun way to make use of paper, paint and glue.
